Have You Ever Google Comics?

If you have ever Google comics, than the only thing will come up is DC and Marvel, Super Hero genre. When you asked the average adults if they read comics, they may say no or redirect you to their kids. I believe the average adult opinion have been influence by social media betrays of comics. Social media promote most of the time DC and Marvel everywhere. Google search engine will only pull up heroes genre. Many YouTubers will say that it is because of Google SEO system. But I have a feeling that is not the case, because I am sure that I am not the only comic writer who used SEO on their website.

It have been cover in other articles that Diamond Comic Distributors dictate that only DC and Marvel make it into major comic stores across the nation washing the competition. Marvel is own by Disney while DC is own by Time Warner Bros. However, Time Warner Bros is own by AT&T.

While Disney and Google have a huge Ad partnership which gives Disney access to multiple platform. So no matter how good your SEO is for your comic or book, Disney will get first dibs on a Google search if you have something in common with Disney productions.

https://www.inc.com/peter-roesler/google-disney-announce-huge-ad-partnership.html

Quote from article above: “Disney and Google share a passion for bringing quality content and information to everyone, everywhere,” wrote Philipp Schindler, Google’s Chief Business Officer, in a post announcing the partnership. “With this new relationship, Disney will bring its entire global digital video and display business onto the Google Ad Manager, which will serve as its core ad technology platform.”

https://about.att.com/story/att_and_google_cloud_team_up_to_connect_customers_to_the_cloud.html

Quote from article above:“We’re committed to helping businesses transform through our edge-to-edge capabilities. This collaboration with Google Cloud gives businesses access to a full suite of productivity tools and a highly secure, private network connection to the Google Cloud Platform,” said Roman Pacewicz, chief product officer, AT&T Business. “Together, Google Cloud and AT&T are helping businesses streamline productivity and connectivity in a simple, efficient way.”

And if you think that is crazy, Google and AT&T have a partnership over business cloud thought G Suite. So Google have created a separate network that all business can communicate to their employee. They can chat, video, streamline, and more on it. Ever tho Google have not came out and say that they have an ad partnership with AT&T like what they have with Disney, that does not mean that Google would treat Time Warner Bros less than Disney. In business you want to be careful about how you treat your business partnerships so it would not surprise me that DC would get more priority over little known comics and other creators.

It is a little scary how much control Google have over the internet. It is hard for new creator such as myself to stand out and be able to get in front of the right audiences. Google have been often me $150 for Ads for my website but they kept decline my ad but will not tell me why. They keep giving me a general answer and they have no way for me to talk with them about it. They don’t have person customer services for us small entrepreneur. It would not be so bad if they did not speak in code. Speaking code is there way of playing dumb so they can only help their over 1 Billion Club.

I would like to heard your thought on this topic. I would like to heard from other creator if they have similar problems or not. If I am mistaking and you found the Golden goose, pretty share.

Angie’s Adventures

Oct 2019, I will be release my first publish comic series call Angie’s Adventures. The main character is Angie, a elf. The story is about how Angie goes on a journey. The world I am create is where most of the population is human. Human have say no to magic and yes to technology. The human are living in a modern day era. However, there are magic in this world with magical creatures such as elves, dwarfs, warforged, neko races, orcs, changelings, and more. The world I am created is very much related to pathfinder RPG and Dungeons and Dragons.

In Oct 2019, I will be released the first chapter of Angie’s Adventures. The story have six main characters:

Angie, an elf, Sorcerer Draconic, chaotic neutral

Angie ancestor had a relationship with a green dragon to save the village from destruction. That is all what I will say about the main character because the first chapter will explains the details and background of Angie character.

Two-Bit, a gnome, Bard, lawful neutral

Two-Bit is about two feet tall and most of the time is mistaking for a 5 year old human child. He is very mysterious and his motive is very unclear.

Alphonse, a dwarf, Tactician, lawful neutral

Alphonse is usually clam and collective, however, when someone does wrong to his brother Fredrick. He blow his top easily. Note: some D&D reference say that dwarf cannot became tactician because tactician is for more intelligent race such as elves and humans. I found this to be a little racist and will used this in my story.

Fredrick, a warforged, Paladin, lawful good

Fredrick is a warforged who development AI intelligent in the last 1000 year war that was between the dwarf/warforged vs orges/aasimar. Aasimar are a race of beast cross with celestrials (They usually look like angel or tengu). After the war was over warforged live side by side with dwarfs as family members. Fredrick and Alphonse are not related by blood but their bond is stronger than blood relations. Fredrick is very timid tho he is a seven foot robot.

This is Yuri when he was five years old. This is one of the scenes from Nocturnal Orphan.

Yuri, a neko (cat people), Monk, chaotic neutral

Yuri was rise in a buddhist temple and learn the way on hand to hand combat. Due to his nature he never stay on the side good and help out his childhood friend Lynn by hiding her out from the people who want her dead.

This is Lynn when she growth to become an assassin.

Lynn, a changeling, Assassin, chaotic neutral

Lynn is nocturnal due to her being half hag and sea serpent. Lynn was drop off as a baby to orphanage and due to her being nocturnal and it was unknown to what she was growing up. The people rising her would give up on her and she would bounce from one foster home to the next until her mentor recruiting her to become an assassin.

I created Nocturnal Orphan to introduce my audiences to the world I am creating.

Lynn story of how she is rise is told in Nocturnal Orphan which you can found on Webtoons. I had to take a break for a month due to finance troubles. However, I will be continuing the story in the next two weeks from now.

It is a story that will cover how being different in a world when you are a minority. It is very much an adventures, fantasy, action, comedy, and maybe romantics story.

I would love to heard what you think of my world that I am creating. Also, this will be a large project and would love to found people who would like to join me in making great content comics.

Feel free to learn more at www.mariahargis.com. I do love comments so leave some for me to read and get back with you.

First Post and Why the name…

You may wonder why the title of this blog is “Little Elf in Big Pond of Drama, The Comic Industry.” “Little elf in big pond of drama prefer to “little fish in big pond”. I am a comic book writer starting out and trying to get my name out by using what I was referral by other people. They say use social media to sale yourself and get your brand name out there. However, it has been almost impossible to grow my followers on Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube. I am getting a lot of growth on Instagram but little to no one on Instagram click the links on the post. So, I cannot get traffic to my website or other platform such as Etsy and YouTube. And YouTube is no better, I have been getting like 2 views per video on YouTube after I follow the instruction from education tutorial on SEO keywords, making better thumbnails for video etc. I ran a few tests myself and found out that YouTube is not recording the external views I get from linking the video on other site such as my website, Facebook, Twitter, email, WordPress, and more. For I have reach out to a few business relation and friends to asked them to review my video. They have told me yes, “I have watched your video and love it.” News is growing on the web that Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube are censoring people who disagree with them, small entrepreneur, or anything that maybe against the large tech company that support the three giants.

In reality, it is hard being a creator in today social media. You may ask why they would do something like this to me that is not very known, I don’t think they are target me directly. I think they are censor small entrepreneur, so we will not become competition later in the future.

I will start by explaining what my business is and what I have been working on. I will be publishing my first comic series call Angie’s Adventures in Oct 2019 under the first ever graphic novel and comics publisher call Zazu Zine + Comix Publishing. I also have a digital comics series on Webtoons call Nocturnal Orphan. I am working with Kim Eley of Kwe Publishing LLC to promote Zazu Zine + Comix. I created a video on YouTube talking about the vision for Zazu Zine + Comix. The vision that Eley have for ZAZU is to give new artist a chance to introduce new content to comic industry and to give new artist a chance to shine. You would think this is good news and no one would have a problem with it; however, when I post this information on Facebook or Twitter, I get crickets… The reason why I know something is not right with views on Facebook and Twitter is because I share the news about my business with my two blogs on WordPress NC Outdoor Adventures Mia and The Fun World of Dating yesterday. I receive several likes and new followers in the last 24 hours.

It got me thinking about how much news is out there that the comic industry is dying and how people should give up on making comics. It left me with the thought what if Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube are supporting this news and want everyone to think comics is dead. If that is the case, it would explain when I made videos that comics is not dead and more people like the idea of having more diversity genres of comics than I am going against what the main media is saying. It makes me an outsider by default which is sad. For there are many people in the education field who like the idea of new comic writers. I have at least three people in the education field have asked for me to come talk with the students about making comics; one was a professional at VCU who would like for me to talk to the college art students about alternate educations, one was a recreation coordinator in my apartment community center in section 8 housing apartments who want me to talk to the children about a future in comics, and a librarian in urban setting who want to hired me as public speaker to talk with the children that visit the library about comics.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/robsalkowitz/2019/01/18/as-comics-direct-market-struggles-a-surprising-publisher-rises/#18c612ea33a6

https://www.forbes.com/sites/adamrowe1/2019/05/27/dc-comics-set-to-stop-double-shipping-comic-books-next-year/#548e6e1d6668

There are real people who want original content in the form of graphic novels and comics; however, there are people out there that just want only a hand full of people to make comics. They do not understand the disservices they are doing to the many people who want to encourage children from reading. Graphic novel is growing because school have open to the idea that it is better for children to read graphic novel than not read at all. People in the education field are trying their best to keep children in this model age interesting in reading and graphic novel and comics help in this area. However, the current comics industry is not meeting to the needs that education required. They are blocking self-publishing comics from getting into comics stores which in return the comics stores cannot stay in business that way. However, there are a few comics stores that have adopt more diversity of publishers, self-publishers, and brought in tabletop games. They have created an environmental of community welcome of families. These comics stores are not in the large cities, they are in the small cities across the country. That is why you never heard about them in the social media and that have been the key to their success for small entrepreneur.

I am adopting this concept into my business practice. I am focus on my location community here in Richmond, VA, USA. Therefore, I go to network meeting in my area for they cannot stop me from getting in contact with the other business entrepreneur in my area. I also travel to anime and comic con. I have staff at a couple of anime con and make a few connections with other writers who are more successful than me and publishers’ companies.

I also have not given up on social media, for I still have a voice; I will keep sharing my brand and promote Zazu Zine + Comix Publishing.

Angie is a descendant of a race of elves who ancestors had a relationship with a green dragon. She is the only one in your blood line the green dragon blood line came to the surface which made her own people shun her. However, she could care less what they think of her.

Oh, if you were wondering why a elf instead of a fish, it is because my main character in Angie’s Adventure is an elf. I have a soft spot for elves.

Competitive Irrational People in Anime Industrial USA

As an illustrator and comic book writer, I have been following the dramas on Twitter and YouTube of anime and comic culture in the USA. I starting following it after hearing from one of my writer friends getting accuse of harassment and it was his girlfriend they accuse him of harassing without knowing that was his girlfriend (it was third party looking in). And another friend of mine who is a cosplayer is getting stalk by a follower of #kickvic because he believe what they are doing is wrong. This is all due to the #metoomovement but this year it is worst than past years due to new hashtag on Twitter #KICKVIC.

If you have not heard there is a war on social media around the subject Vic Mignogna vs Funimation and a few voice actress/actor. I don’t normally care about Hollywood or celebrity dramas, but unfortunately these people have a huge follower who going out to attack people who disagree with them. This does not effect most normal people; however, if you go to comic con or anime con, than you will be dealing with this drama indirectly. Such as voice actor/actress cancel events because they don’t want to be at the same comic con or anime con as the person they don’t like. And some of their follower will troll people at con that disagree with them or they just out right hate the person. Also, on looking who see what is going on with #KICKVIC think to themselves “hey, I could do the same thing to my rival,” meaning other writer, voice actor/actress could be target with false accusation. For example, it is just like a famous serial killer break out on the scene, there are copy cat who want to copy the crime and get their five minutes of frame.

Most of the force that is pushing this is people in power who ego have gotta so big. I have staff at some anime con. I have learn thought staffing that in the last few years, that voice actor/actress charge like $5K or more depending on their celebrity status to be a guest at comic con or anime con. However, it was not like this several years ago, because in recent years, anime have made it way into pop culture and is very popular in the US. The anime english dub industry have little to no pubic relations, because people who work in the the field, say whatever they want on Twitter ever if it is harmful to someone else.

I will be following the law sue Vic vs Funimation because I am hoping the court will change our Twitter culture and stop some of the harmful campaign that is in our culture. There is one positive thing about this, this does open the door for anime con and comic con to explore at invited small publisher companies, authors, illustrator, cosplayers, and less known voice actor/actress as guest. I am a big believer when the people up top gotten too big for their britches, they can be taking down a peg by a new comer.

Now if you are wanting to be a comic writer or artist, you will have to face some of this. However, I feel like this is very similar to dealing with an ex-husband. You just have to practice good organization and be out spoken. I believe when you are outspoken and show to the world that you are confidence than people will think twice before they decide to mess with you. You will just have to learn by trial and error like everything else in business.

My Inspiration behind Nocturnal Orphan

This post will be a real personal topic for me. I have live thought a lot of hardship which help fuel my creative ability. So it is no different when I came up with the character Lynn in Nocturnal Orphan. These reason why I start Lynn at 18 months is because I want to show what the problems she may face at this age blocks. The series is a long one so at some point I will skip to age 5, 10, and 13. I want to show what kinds of problems she would face in a orphanage, and foster homes during these key age points.

My inspiration behind Lynn is my own son. My son have mild autism and have bounce from foster home to the next. He is finally living with my ex husband again. I will not go into many details about the situation but I will say that not all adult react in the right way with children that have mental illness such as autism. And not all children with autism are easy to control when they act out. It is a very difficult thing for parents, the child, social services, and the schools.

We as a society still have a lot to learn about these illness in children and it does not help that there are some who will response bad when they see someone who is different from them. These people may not be open to learn and change their behavior toward the child that is different who have no control over the way they behave due to their illness.

I believe that younger generation have a easier time learning to accept people that are different than the older generations. So in my comic series, you may notices that Lynn make get help more offer from the children living in the orphanage than the adults who are watching over her.

I did not just make this series for children, I made this for adults in mind (parents). I feel that comics series can express facial expressions more than putting this into words. Also, we are at a point in our society where most adults are not reading novel regular. Everyone live in a face-paced environment where most do not have the time to read a lot. I feel like I would reach more people if the layout of the story was in a comic series that would make it face to read thought with pictures.

So I hope you take the opportunity to read Nocturnal Orphan on Webtoons and thank you for your time to read this.

Panels at Conventions

This last weekend, I learn a lot at Kigacon. I have decide that I will be looking at running panels at conventions in the future. I want to show that it is possible to create comics without using Adobe products. I have been using Affinity Photo and Designer instead of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. I also used a free software program call Medibang Paint Pro.

Kigacon was a college con and very low turn out due to it being small con. However, many people who came did not have money to spend on vendors. Also, I feel like many was shy to talk with artist with their own work instead of fan art. I did get some feedback that $10.00 was a lot to spend at a vendor table, many of the people their was looking to spend $2-5.00 on items. And there was a lot who did not take 5 seconds to look at a table, and when I say hi, they ran off.

After having my table setup at four conventions, I have came to conclusion that many cons goer wish that they could do what I do but don’t know how or believe it is not possible for them to do so. From my personal experiences, I know that many people who go to conventions may only go to 2-3 con per year. Most con goers are millennial that work two jobs and have little time off during the year. I believe that this is effecting how they spend money at cons and many of their spirits are breaking. I am not saying millennial are not the only ones who go to conventions, I am just saying most are millennial.

This is why I believe that I would have a bigger impact on my business if I run panels at conventions on the base on how to create comics on Webtoons and the importance of networking in your local community. If you have watch how Hollywood have just keep remaking movies and old ideas, you will see that our country is in need to new ideas. Movies and shows on TV usually start from writer and book author. I know their are many anime fans and heroes comics fan who enjoy writing fan novels on fans formal websites. I believe these fans have talent that could create original work that would bring about new shows on TV and movies. I believe we have talent in this country that we have not use to their full potentials. I know I could uses some of these talent people help, for I am looking to build a team for my comic series. That is the other reason why I am looking to run panels, I am hoping to recruit others to help with my comic series. A successful comic series takes a team of talent people.

Business Relationship

Now that I am letting people know that I have my own comic series on Webtoons, I have been asked to talk to other about my experiences and how I got to this point.  I feel like I am still very early in my journey but to others it seems like a big milestone. I guess in a way, I have come a long way when I look back at what I live thought to get here. However, from the business point of view, it does not look like a very long time.  I did not get serious about my business until Oct 2018.

Before that point, I was working a full-time job in retail and working on business ideas on the side. If I go back to 2016, I was trying to find a way that I could promote my art. At the time, I was feeling down about my painting and thought that people were telling me that I have talent to be nice. I did not take it seriously that I had real talent in painting and drawing. Because I had trouble getting anyone wanting to buy my art. I thought since people are not willing to buy my art, that all what they were saying was bull shit.

So, when a friend (friend A) suggest that I try stand up comedy and being my normal curious self, I say why not. I try it for a while and it was hard, I had trouble writing punch lines and landing them. I was not doing too well at it and the problem was what people thought as funny, I totally miss it. The jokes just pass right over my head. While I was trying comedy and going to open mic, I made more connections with people. I was getting to know the comedy and people who perform in the Richmond area. Eventually, I had another friend (friend B) who suggest I try drag, as in drag Queen. Friend B says it would be good for me because of my art and I could make my own costume since I have a love for anime.  That’s right, I did try it and I came up my own drag name. I was a bio gender drag which mean I play as a girl or boy. I focus on characters at the age of 12-year-old. It was a lot of fun, but I did not feel like my characters had much impact on the crowd that went to see drag show.  Plus, it felt like a lot of work with little turn around as far as pay. I could not keep doing it because I would go broke.

You may think this part of my life was a waste, but I learn what I like and what I did not like though these experiences. I also made my important network connections in this part of my life. I made a good friend (friend C) who is a comedy on the side and love music. Friend C was able to connect me with another of his friend who was looking for people to help staff at anime convention.  I was able to make more connection as working at anime conventions and I met people who was running their own business at an early ago. It was mind opening experience that help me to look at the possibility of selling my painting and learning from others what I could do with my talent in drawing and painting.

I feel like the biggest part of my business is connections I made with people and that you are never too old to learn new things. I had people asked me why I still go to networking event. It is very simple, I go to make connection for you never know what kind of project or new adventure that a single person in your life will bring.  Plus, I feel like I am very long way of being successful in my business. I feel like I have so much more to learn and to improve. I go to networking event to build good relationship with the people I know and to make new connections. Also, I would love to help others who are still trying to figure out what they want to do and looking for helpful tips as well.

I have a strong believe that if you bring in good karma than you will receive good karma. The world is full of negative and malicious behavior. I believe as an artist, I could make a different if I am present in my business community. And because I am an artist, I dress up as one, so not very business casual. I am very unconventional which I am okay with. However, it works for me because I am artist and many of my business friends enjoy talking with me because I am comfortable with who I am. I am at the point in my life that I am comfortable in my own skin.

Wednesday Thoughts

Date: 3/6/19

Every Wednesday I come out with a new episode of Nocturnal Orphan on Webtoons. It is a lot of work to make comics and write the story for them; however, I love telling stories and drawing the illustrations that goes with them. It is a challenge every week to made them. That is why it give me great enjoy when people read them and tell me that they like it.

I am very new at making comics, however, each time I work on a new episode, I feel like I am getting better. Most of my influences comes from the many anime, manga, and comics I have watch or reed. Stories have a way of aspirate us to be better person and/or never giving up when things are hard. I also think it is a great way of being connection with each other by having discussion about what we think of the story. I hope that my stories help someone.

I had times in my life when things was hard to overcome and stories have remember me to keep moving forward. I am still moving forward and I don’t regret that I never give up on my dreams. I am still on my journey to my dreams, however, one part of my dream have came true. Which to be a comic book artist.

The things about dreams, you have to keep pushing toward them even when it looks hopeless. I feel like I had a lot of detours that delay me from my dreams, but now that I look back…I would not be able to write the way I do if I have not took the detours. I had a lot of heartache and painful events that happen in my life and I am able to create a story that express these feelings that other can related to. So if you get lost on the way, it is very possible to get back to your dreams and you can use what you learn towards your dreams. The most important part to remember is to never give up.

Angie Adventure Continues

Meet Lynn, she is a changeling that is part hag (witch) and sea serpent. Due to the fact that she is part sea serpent, she is nocturnal. She is a orphan. While growing up, she was move from one foster home to next. The most kind person would get so frustrated with her and end up giving up on her. However, one day a female assassin came thought the village that Lynn was living in and heard about the rumor say about Lynn. Lynn foster mother was dragging Lynn by the arm out of the orphan home and yelling at Lynn. The assassin saw this and punish the woman in the face. The assassin say to Lynn, “How would you like to become an assassin?” Lynn fast asleep say, “mmhmm…sure..”

When I was coming up with this character, I was remember what school was like with trouble kids. In fact, I was a trouble kid from time to time. Most of the problems we see in school is because kids have trouble fitting in with our society rules. However, some problems are not the kid fault at all. They just need someone to meet their needs instead of trying to have the kid fit their need. I enjoy writing fiction because their are author that I think are genius at getting people to listen to their view on the world. For example, Frankenstein written by Mary Shelley. It was a political message to the people of her day but in a way that was fun. I am hoping that I could do the same but with comic books. I am a visual learning and know how hard it is to stick to something that does not have pictures. So I hope that I could reach people who have simple learning style as myself.
